USC 3, Maple River 1
The United South Central Rebel girls volleyball team got back in the ‘win’ column. The Rebels downed the Maple River Eagles 3-1 in volleyball action on Saturday, Nov. 7.
The Rebels lost the first set, then came back to take three straight from the Eagles. The set scores were 20-25, 25-23, 25-15, 25-23.
“I’m proud of the kids for getting the job done today,” head coach Joe Kuechenmeister said. “After a disappointing collapse in set one, our girls made a couple of adjustments defensively that allowed us to get the ‘W’ in four. From a coaching standpoint, it was great to see us pull through in sets two and four when things got tight.”
Josie Schumann led the way for the Rebel girls with 14 kills, five digs, four blocks and one ace.
Kylie Niebuhr had five kills, 14 digs, one assist and one ace. Melany Ehlert added three kills, 11 digs and two aces.
“We’ve been in some close, late set situations where we played ‘not to lose’ and we ended up on the short end, so to see us stay aggressive was a sign that we’re developing more confidence and we’re growing up a bit,” the coach said. “Kylie Niebuhr was big for us. She’s a fighter, and while she’s maybe not the flashiest volleyball player out there numbers wise, her competitive spirit and work ethic provided a spark we needed today.”
Other players contributing were Kendal Harpestad with three kills, Kiera Schultz with two kills and two digs, Dani Kirkeide with 12 digs and two aces and Hannah Olson with five digs and one ace.
