Denver and its surrounding metropolitan areas are home to 14 of Colorado’s top 20 public high schools, according to an annual ranking published by U.S. News and World Report.

D’Evelyn Junior/Senior High School in Denver was named the best public school in the state, followed by Peak to Peak Charter School in Lafayette, Stargate Charter School in Thornton, Liberty Common Charter School in Fort Collins, and Denver School of the Arts. (See the top 20 below.)

Additionally, D’Evelyn Junior/Senior High School cracked the top 100, coming in as the 67th best school in the country.

U.S. News and World Report ranks schools each year based on several factors, including the proportion of 12th graders who took advanced placement and international baccalaureate exams, math and reading standardized testing scores, and graduation rates. The publication also weighs how underserved students perform, including low-income, Black and Hispanic enrollees.

U.S. News and World Report has used the above methodology since 2019.

Because the data comes from two years prior — in this case the 2018-2019 school year — the results were not affected by COVID-19.

U.S. News and World Report ranked 368 schools in Colorado and about 17,800 nationally.

The Centennial State ranked ninth in the nation based on the number of schools that fell in the top 5%, 10% and 25% of public institutions across the nation. Massachusetts ranked first, while Maine ranked last in the state-by-state comparison.
