The flag of Ireland is a distinct tricolor flag of green, white, and orange that was originally presented as a gift from a group of French women who were sympathetic to the Irish and wanted to offer a gift embodying unity. The green represents Roman Catholics, orange signifies Protestants, and the white center is the hope for lasting peace for all Irish. In 1916, the tricolor was hoisted above Dublin’s general post office after the Easter Rising and has been the official flag ever since.

It took time and trouble to reach co-existence but today the island is home to 4.8 million in the Republic of Ireland. Geopolitically, Ireland may be divided (much like their football loyalties) but Irish culture has long been richly unified with literature from Seamus Heaney and James Joyce, music from U2, The Chieftains, and the Dubliners and art from as far back as the Bronze Age. Visitors marvel at the Giant’s Causeway, appreciate the rolling green meadows, and kiss the Blarney Stone in hopes of gaining a little Irish eloquence.

Ireland has its own language and lifestyle that is influenced by Western culture but is still distinctly Irish. So, whether you’re raising a red lemonade, a green beer, having a nip of Bailey’s Irish Cream in your coffee, or enjoying a whiskey or Guinness, Slainte! And if you’re lucky enough to be Irish, may the wind always be at your back.

At Elmer’s Flag and Banner, we have the Irish tricolor in stock. As for the 2,600 Gaelic football clubs’ flags, we might have to search a bit more, but we’re up for the challenge. Happy Saint Patrick’s Day!
